HomeAway - Ministry of Detourism

Launch Site

B-Reel allows users to upload their face and map it onto HomeAway's TV commercial. Additional content like Google Maps satellite images can be added to make this the "most customizable Super Bowl commercial ever".

Client: HomeAway
Agency: B-Reel, Vendor
Year: 2011
Type: Interactive Commercial
Role: Flash Development
Team: 4 Developers

Content Mapping

Part of my job on this project was to map dynamic content to video in a few places, so that for example the photo of the user's house would appear in the iPad in HomeAway's Super Bowl commercial. To achieve this effect I parsed After Effects tracking coordinates into XML and then used that to distort and place a bitmap underneath an alpha flv layer.

Google Maps Integration

I also was responsible for the Google Maps API integration of the site. Users can enter their address so that in the customized commercial a helicopter can be seen flying over their house.

Probe View

Another part of my work on this project was the "Probe View", in which registered HomeAway users can enter their home's ID so that through an API our Flash application can access the photos they had uploaded on the regular HomeAway site before. The user can then select any of those photos to appear in a customized house tour, which is spiced up through narration by the "Minister of Detourism" as well as a camera probe interface style.

Robot Legs

We built the project using FDT, SVN and with heavy use of the "Robot Legs" framework, which allowed us to implement an extremely modular workflow. This way all developers could constantly compile revisions to different sections of the site, without getting in each other's way. This very smooth workflow of the development team is what allowed us to launch to site on time for the Super Bowl despite a very tight deadline.
