IBM: Smarter Planet

Launch Site

Ogilvy approached Firstborn to develop a Flash page for IBM's "Smarter Planet" program, that would aggregate articles and case studies on the topic and present them in a visually pleasing and easy to navigate container.

Client: IBM
Agency: Firstborn, Ogilvy
Year: 2009
Type: Flash Microsite
Role: Flash Development
Team: Myself + 1 Intern

Content Aggregation

This project aggregated a huge amount of IBM related content, to display it in one central container. In order to do this, the site needed to be built in an extremely flexible way, allowing the different "buckets" to adapt to the variety of content types that could be presented at different times.

Transitions

The flexibility of the site also shows in the way that each section animates in and out. Whether a content bucket is expanding or the user clicked on another section of the site: smooth transitions make for a pleasant user experience.

Video Case Studies

Part of the site is also a player for the numerous video case studies about IBM's "Smarter Planet" program. Initially planned to be an embedded YouTube player, the decision was made to host the videos on IBM's server and create our own video player, for easier aggregation of the videos and more freedom in functionality and design.

File Bin

Users can bookmark videos or articles by saving them to their "File Bin" on the site. With the help of a Shared Object Flash will remember which articles the user was interested in, so that even with newly added content being featured on the front page the users can easily find and access older articles they were interested in.
